Green group gets award

THE Usk Conservation and Environmental Group's improvement and maintainance of the landscape in and around the town earned a volunteer achievement award from Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations.

Weekly surgeries

In order to improve communications between the town's residents and Usk Town Council, a new initiative of wee kly surgeries has been launched. People will be able to air concerns about town issues face to face with Councillors, in private, at the Sessions House. The surgeries will be held between 10am and 11am on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and between 7pm and 8pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.

Bridge hit again

Just one week after repairs followingtraffic damage to Usk bridge, there has been another incident of aforeign heavy goods lorry clipping the corner of the bridge, causing yet more unsightly damage.

Civic Service

Usk's Mayor and Mayoress, Tony and Kim Kear, welcomed over 150 guests to this year's Civic Service, held at St. Mary's Church, Usk, followed by a reception at the Sessions House.

Wales in Bloom judging

This year's judging for Usk's entry in the Wales in Bloom competition will be on the morning of Monday July 21. As in the past two years the judge will be Mr Jim Goodwin. Usk in Bloom Chairman David Gale said, "Although it's nice to have a judge who now knows Usk well, it is also a great challenge to find fresh ideas and new beds and displays to impress him."

Banner stolen

There was only one blight on this year's Usk Open Gardens week-end, when vandals stole the banner advertising the event from the railings of the HSBC bank in Twyn Square. The banner was removed on Friday night, just before the event was due to start and the Open Gardens committee is asking for its return or any information as to its whereabouts.

Open Gardens Awards

Following its 14th successful annual week-end, Usk Open Gardens Committee donated £12,000 to good causes at a follow-up event at the Sessions House.

New first responders

Following an appeal for more recruits, the Usk First Responder Team now has three newly-trained volunteers. Tara Kear, Debbie Murray and Pat Seabourne underwent two week-ends of intensive training to join the Usk team, which has been running for six years.

Town guide

A new town guide for Usk has just been published, in time for the visitors and tourists who are a feature of the town in the summer months.

Busy weekend

Usk author Julie McGowan will be busy next week-end with two book-signings for her latest novel, Just One More Summer' On Saturday June 28 she will be at Blaenavon Heritage Centre from 10.30 am, joining in with the town's Heritage Day, and on Sunday June 29 , which will be the second day of Usk Open Gardens week-end, Julie will be signing books at Mandalay book shop in Usk from 11.30am.
