Grateful newlyweds make gift to Blaenau Gwent charity and hospital

SPECIAL DONATION: Simon and Sara Green on their wedding day SPECIAL DONATION: Simon and Sara Green on their wedding day

A BRIDE who battled breast cancer during the lead-up to her big day gave a special thank-you gift to Blaenau Gwent charity In the Pink with a donation of more than £1,000.

Newly-wed Sara Green and her husband, Simon, decided to ask for donations to be made at their wedding instead of gifts so they could make the special gesture as a way of giving something back.

Along with Gift Aid, the couple made a donation of around £1,200 to cancer charity In the Pink and around £1,000 to Llandough Hospital, near Cardiff, where Mrs Green underwent a mastectomy and where she also works as a surgical care practitioner.

Mrs Green, 52, was diagnosed with grade three breast cancer in February 2011 and underwent a mastectomy at Llandough Hospital shortly after.

Her eight months of treatment also saw her undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Her treatment is now complete but she is still on some medication and has an annual check-up.

Prior to the diagnosis, the couple, who divide their time between their homes in Tredegar and Rhymney, had discussed marriage during their 17 years together but the news spurred Mr Green to put their plans into action and he proposed.

The couple were married at Miskin Manor on November 30.

Mr Green, 48, said: “We wanted to make a token of our thanks. You can never thank people enough for saving a life.”
