Here is the footage of the demolition as recorded live from earlier this morning:

Now in slow motion:

11:58am

The demolition was welcomed by a senior Newport councillor as a major step in the redevelopment of Newport city centre.
Councillor Ken Critchley, Newport council cabinet member for infrastructure, said: “The removal of the car park represents a significant stage in the demolition programme.
“Construction of the eagerly awaited Friars Walk leisure and retail development will begin shortly.”

South Wales Argus:

Crowds gasp as Newport car park is reduced to rubble
ARGUS reporter Andy Rutherford joined crowds of Newport folk who had gathered to watch this morning's demolition of Newport's Capitol car park. More

11:30am

We also understand a drunk man tried and failed to get into the demolition site last night.

Mark Wallace, operations manager for Specialist Security, said a drunk had tried to climb into the site on Saturday night.

“Our guard was quite able to deal with the situation,” he said, saying that the man was moved on.

Ellis is from Blackwood and his dad works with a client of demolition contractor Cuddy.

8:12am

We've also been told that 13 year-old Ellis Moore will have the honour of pressing the button.

8:10am

A Cuddy spokesperson told us the explosives will be placed across six floors of the car park.

8:06am

We're being told we'll going to the viewing point at 8.30 with the demolition happening at 9am.

8:04am

For those waiting for live coverage, we're all at the Newport Centre now waiting to go to the footbridge over the Usk for the demolition.

8:03am

There are 750 drill holes each with a charge in them. 35 kg of explosives will be used.

8:00am

Lots of people in hi-viz vests grabbing a coffee at the Newport Centre before the big event:

South Wales Argus:

7:54am

Looks like it's going to be a beautiful morning for a demolition - threatened rain hasn't turned up.

6:42am

Live coverage will be streamed here:

6:41am

We will bring you live coverage from 7.30am when the Newport landmark is destroyed by explosives as part of the city is demolished to make way for the Friars Walk development.

We will bring you the build-up as the expected crowds gather, details of the operation and pictures and video of the demolition.

I wasn't aware that it was due between 8 and 10, the Argus with best intentions and presumably in touch with people who know gave a time of 9.00am. This time was then moved to 8.30am but I had already left to watch it. If I had known it could have been any time between 8 and 10 I would have left earlier and waited.
Very frustrating but that's life.

To all those that are moaning about the coverage etc, or anyone that moans about the content shown on the argus website..... Has anyone ever heard of the term "You pay for what you get". Seeing as nobody pays to view the content here then we should be grateful there is any at all.

I do agree though that the person pressing the button should have been selected a bit more thoughtfully, bit harsh calling him a brat though.

Looking forward to seeing the edited video as I suppose the cameraman was freezing his nuts off filming that.

Atleast what became an eyesore has come to an end, hopefully now we can look forward to a different future, I say different because it's probably not going to be bright for a while, not atleast while we have the type of councelors that we have at the moment. They just do what they want when they want. Pretty much the same as building the clock tower on the civic all those years ago, so I don't really know why we expect any different now.

Because by the time the Argus had changed the time I had left to watch it at 9.00am. Not blaming the Argus at all as they reported the times they were given. But if the Contractors had stuck with any time between 8.00am and 10.00am and not said 9.00am or 8.30am then more people would have been able to catch it.

Well, at the end of the day the contractors are in work doing an expensive and dangerous job, they aren't there putting a show on for us so if they move times to suit the job in hand so be it.
I have got over my disappointment now, it's just that since leaving Llanwern I have to get my explosion kicks from wherever I can!
You could always join the military - they live for that ****. Plus, they just blow up whatever they like without all that red tape and inconvenient clearing of the area first.

I heard the explosion from my flat at the bottom of Barrack Hill - it sounded like it was right outside, it was that loud!!
For god sake stop moaning u should have got off ur backside early enough to go there instead of having a hang over from ur night out and after that go get a job like me 12 hours a day at least then u have something dwcent to talk
Without wishing to get into a argument, for your information I have my own business which demands my time seven days a week and after that I volunteer my time as a first responder to the Welsh Ambulance Service amongst other things to help my community. My time is precious and certainly never wasted by having a hangover. I'm glad you work hard 12 hours a day, good for you, but don't assume that your the only one who does. The timings today were important to me not because I can't get out of bed but because I have many things to get done.

Generally speaking however, I think that a large part of the reason why the press now finds itself in such disrepute amongst us 'ungrateful peasant masses' is the fault of the decades-long horrendous behaviour of the mainstream newspapers and so-called 'jounalists' themselves. It's not too difficult to guess just why 'mere' Jo/e Public doesn't trust the press anymore when enquiries such as Leveson have exposed its deliberate misreporting in the service of the vested interests of its handful of very rich, powerful and consequently influential owners - not to mention its persecution of already marginalised minority groups and its vile, sick underhand illegal ways of obtaining information about people. Whilst I'm by no means accusing the 'humble' Argus of engaging in such activities I still nevertheless await Kev's or Maria's editorial which condemns the bigoted mind-set and unscrupulous, untruthful behaviour of their co-professionals of the national press instead of the more predictable, moral high Rebekah's horse sermon warning of the assault against press freedoms. Contrary no doubt to many haters disappointment I won't hold my breath!

But as they originally said any time between 8 and 10, sense would say to get there before 8.

No - what I was saying, in case you missed it the first time - is that common sense aint that common.

As an aside, I think you folks should lay off the Argus regarding the demolition times. They only published what the contractors told them. If you're upset that the contractors moved the time forward, keep in mind that they're paid to demolish the building (possibly by Newport Council itself). If they're able to do so half an hour earlier than planned then it's in their interest to do it as soon as possible and move on with the next part of their jobs rather than paying their workmen to do nothing for half an hour while people turn up to watch. Unless you'd rather they charged people to watch the demolition.

In any case I'm sure we can unite in celebration that Newport's continuing transformation and renovation has taken another great step forward!

it was too early in the morning for me (no buses from Rogy at that time) but it was fantastic to see the big pile of rubble when I got into town. Already the skyline seems far less oppressive.

The strangest thing - how much of the roof was left intact laying on top of the piles of rubble. One of the lamps that were on the top was still standing up vertically on top of the pile.

The most important thing despite all the complaining - it's the first stage of a new beginning for the city centre.

G'day People of Newport! I am reporting from Turangi in New Zealand, and I stayed up till well afteer 11 pm to catch the Live blast of the Capitol Car Park, and even I missed it! I keept refreshing the ARGUS's Front Page, and suddenly, there it was. The photo of the demolition and below it, "In case you missed it. . ." The clip.
I think whoever said "GONE in Six Seconds" needs their time adjusted. When I timed it, it was very close to 2.5 seconds. WOW! They didn't waste any time bringing it down, did they? I was sort of expecting, a series of shots (B,B,B,B,B,BOOM!) from front to back, working their way up and across, so that the whole lot would just collapse to the right as we were looking at it. But, that's what exactly happened with what sounded like just ONE BIG BANG. Crikey! What a beaut! Well done! I am just so glad I managed to see it, even if a little later than I calculated. we're exactly 12 Hours ahead of you, plus One for Daylight Saving. As I write it is NOW 12:18 pm, Lunch Time, in SUMMER. For you, its probably 11:18 pm and close to Midnight, and WINTER.
Thank You ARGUS for letting us (ME anyway.) Down Under see this Blast, too.
Yucky Dah! (Sorry, I don't know how its spelled. My mum used to say it alot!) Have a Very Happy and Safe New Year.

G'day Merv, I don't know what you meant when you said we don't get out much in New Zealand. Have another look at the time I stayed up to watch this demolition! it was nearly MIDNIGHT!! I live on the other side of the Planet!! I may have only missed the LIVE video link by a few minutes, but, at least I saw it before I called it a night.
I won't go crook at you, because you obviously didn't know that I wasn't actually there to see it, as I stated. By the way, the time as I am writing this to you now is 11:10pm New Zealand Daylight Saving Time. Time to shut down. G'Night Folks! "Yucky Dah!"

Now move the library and museum to the Westgate Hotel, put the multiplex cinema in the old library building and put the new shopping centre in the empty Kingsway and save all that money. The old bus staion can now be landscaped and used as a recreational area and "Wintergarden" with some decent events on to attract people here.We could have a Market there on certain days.Put a bus station in Cambrian Road for Newport Transport, and Stagecoach can have the one by the Market.
