PICTURE UPDATE: Newport man who raped child jailed

CHILD RAPIST: Ryan Edwards

CHILD RAPIST: Ryan Edwards

A NEWPORT man who admitted raping a child under 13 was jailed for 10 years.

Ryan Edwards, 24, of St David’s Crescent, persuaded the girl to get into a compromising situation with him in October last year, when he was then 23, Cardiff Crown Court heard.

Ieuan Bennett, prosecuting, told the court that in interview the victim said she’d asked the defendant to “stop because it was going too far”.

She remembers the defendant asking her: “Don’t you want it to happen? Because I do.” She remembers telling him “I don’t know because, like, I don’t know – you’re meant to have your first time with someone special”.

“She remembers the defendant telling her “Yeah but it doesn’t matter”.

“It of course is rape because she was under 13 and could not give consent. No doubt of course the defendant knew her age.

“There’s no claim he threatened her or used any violence.”

Edwards pleaded guilty to three counts of rape of a child under 13.

Rupert Lowe, defending, said: “He’s not somebody who will do anything like this again. This was an immature young man with no previous record and from a good family.

“He was the adult, she was the child. She was reciprocating, but the responsibility was entirely his.”

Judge Philip Richards told Edwards: “You were in a far more powerful position – you should have been behaving as an example to her. Instead you abused her. There was a gross abuse of trust.”

He sentenced Edwards to 10 years in prison for each of the three counts, to run concurrently.

Edwards was also told to pay a £120 victim surcharge and was barred from working with children and must register as a sex offender for life.

I thought British justice priorities the most hateful and unacceptable crimes of abusing children, this man will be out in 4 years. Maybe time we reverted to natural justice as opposed to 'human rights' applied justice that penalises those most vulnerable. I feel sure if put in the stocks in John Frost Square I can guarantee he will never do it again. We are all fed up of paedo's getting treatments that don't work, they cannot stop their vile behaviour, so we must stop them.

This makes me feel physically sick I knew the guy personally for a short while and you would never of knew. He is a total drain on this planets resources and now I have to pay for him to live also it makes my blood boil. I cant believe this is all he got I have young daughters also and one positive even though its not enough is there is one less piece of scum on the streets in public. On another note this guy dated my step sister who he groomed / brainwashed into believing she is in love with him and will wait for his release she is currently living with this guys parents. Lets just say I have distanced myself from that as much as possible as I cant condone those actions but am powerless to what I can do.

Definitely don't think medieval justice is the answer, but I do believe an offence like this should carry an automatic life sentence. Ten years is not enough. I noticed that the men who sprung their mates out of a prison van in Manchester got longer sentences than this individual. I'm all for this "paedophile village" setup they have in the states. When the individual finishes his sentence, he is released into a secure village and has to live out his days as a part of this community. It gives the illusion of freedom, no bars and locks etc, but he cannot leave the "village" The place functions like a normal town with shops etc. They also give them the option to get voluntarily chemically castrated. I think it's a fairly good idea in principle, although I haven't looked into it. I saw it on a Louis Theroux documentary a few years back I think. I really don't like the idea of capital punishment. Death is an easy way out for them.

You really shouldn't try to derail and hijack this debate for your own personal homosexual equality agenda. You really should have more respect. Everyone is aware that equality is important, but you do your movement no favours by shoe-horning it into every single debate. Sometimes it's inappropriate and does more damage than good. In this instance it is very inappropriate and selfish.

This case highlights what I believe to be one of the biggest flaws with sentencing guidelines as they stand.

As I understand it he was found guilty of 3 counts of the offence and was sentenced to 10 years for each, however these 3 sentences are to run "concurrently".

This happens almost every time someone is convicted of multiple offences and effectively means that once you have committed a crime once there is no additional punishment for committing further offences.

EVERY prison sentence should run consecutively so that the more offences you commit, the longer you spend inside.

Yeah, when I read it originally it seemed like 10 years. On re-reading it suggests 30. I think the Argus updated this.

It say that the sentences will run concurrently i.e. All that the same time. If he was to serve thirty years the sentences would be set to run consequently

It is a basic tenet of our legal system that everyone is entitled to qualified representation in court and that defence is conducted to the best of that representative's abilities

I've often wondered how a barrister manages to conduct the defence of someone who has committed such a crime and doing so in the knowledge that the person they are defending is probably guilty.

It is a mark of their professionalism that they are able to do so, and don't forget that without a qualified advocate to act for the defence there could be no trial, no conviction and no sentence.
