A 28-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested in connection with arson offences following a fire at a flat in the Newport estate of Bettws.
No one was harmed in the blaze but the police are treating the incident as suspicious.
Firefighters were called to Monnow Way at just after 10pm last night. Three crews from Malpas, Maindee and Cwmbran put the fire out within an hour.
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
Inspector Amanda Williams of Gwent Police told the Argus that officers were called to the incident at just after 10pm.
She said that the premises were searched by firefighters but that no persons were in the flat.
“Police are treating the fire as suspicious,” she said, confirming that a 28-year-old man had been arrested in connection with arson offences.
She said enquiries are ongoing and that the man continues to help police with their enquiries.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service control room said on Sunday morning that firefighters were called to the incident at just after 10pm.
Three crews – from Malpas, Maindee and Cwmbran – attended the ground floor flat fire, which was out by 11pm.
A worker in the fire control room said fire officers used two breathing apparatus, one house reel jet and a safety jet during the incident.
The worker said officers from the fire and police services were both in attendance on Sunday morning.
