Man stable after Malpas 'attack'

South Wales Argus: SCENE: CJ's Fish and Chip shop on Malpas Road SCENE: CJ's Fish and Chip shop on Malpas Road

UPDATE: 10.50am

Residents say the man was lying motionless in the middle of the road while a woman was seen trying to help him after coming out of her car.

Eyewitnesses say the incident happened last night near the traffic lights outside CJ's Fish and Chip shop along Malpas Road.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "A woman was knocked down on Malpas Road a few months ago but [the police presence] was nothing like it was last night so I thought that was strange.

"Police taped off a large part of the road, and it was closed for a bit."

UPDATE: 10.00am

A 55-year-old cyclist suffered head injuries and is in a stable condition after reports of an attack outside a fish and chip shop in the Malpas area of Newport last night.

The man from Newport was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, where he remains this morning.

Police were called to reports of an assault on Malpas Road near the shop at around 10.30pm last night.

A 22-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, both from the Newport area, have both been arrested on suspicion of assault. They remain in police custody at this time.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to ring 101 quoting log 539 21/05/14.

Hope the poor guy is going to be ok. Is this the result of a traffic argument? The no U turns signs are both sides of the road and painted in large letters over the road at the junction but this is ignored often. Motorists continually block the road and yellow box junction by using it to park on while they wait to U turn. There is traffic carnage on a regular basis and often rows between inconvenienced motorists and people who point out the danger of blocking the dual carriageway and yellow box at such a major and busy junction.
Hope the cyclist makes a speedy recovery.

Never, and I find this comment so disappointing. Every town and city has it's problem residents, however, why allow them to make you feel ashamed of your roots. I was born in Newport and will always feel proud to admit this. Yes Newport has had issues in the past. With Friars Walk now started this great city of ours is changing for the better. Let's feel great about this and not use every news article in the Argus as an opportunity to have a moan about Newport.

Firstly, do not twist my words to satisfy your rather simplistic mind. I am not defending any assault whatsoever. My point which I am sure is clear to most intelligent people is that a small minority do not make a city. Newport has plenty to be proud of and it's residents should not be embarrassed to admit they are from the city because of this pathetic minority. Secondly, why do you and so many other people need to lower the level of discussion on this board to rather petty and unneccessary comments, mu user name has nothing to do with this discussion.

newport is like zombie dawn . ffs its a hell hole .its dirty its full of feral scum alcoholics and addicts littering the town .the streets are owned by muggers and dealers .burglaries are common place through out the city both day and night . Gun fights in broad day light . its reminiscent of chicago in the prohibition days . this is not a dig at the decent hard working people of newport .but lets be honest about it .what ive stated above is the truth and the police and council and the politicians turn a blind eye to it .whats needed is a huge crack down on all elements of crime and anti-social behaviour .zero-tolerance and the courts have to working with the police and handing out long jail sentences .not constantly listening to the poor little johnny had a hard up-bringing etc mitigation by legal aid assisted defense barristers .At the moment newport is a dirty repulsive city and only getting worse .
