CENSUS: Drivers are stopped in the traffic survey on Chepstow Road in Langstone today

THE traffic census is scheduled to take place on the M4 junction 23a roundabout Eastbound today.

Newport Bus said it had also received reports of surveys taking place on the A48 toward Langstone.

Operational manager Gareth Jones said routes had been unaffected though.

Traffic chaos has been caused in Newport for more than a week due to the roadside stops, which are for a Welsh government traffic survey.

The survey, which drivers are asked to free post back once completed, asks questions about the specific journey they are making at the time. Questions include where have you driven from and to, and the reason for the journey. The survey aims to assess travel patterns in South-East Wales.

Drivers vented their anger online last week, with many saying the lack of warning meant they had been unable to make travel arrangements to avoid the delays.

A Welsh Government statement said: "We won't be advertising the dates and locations of surveys as this could effect the results."

Of course when debates take place on this Foum and others and the word "Report" is mentioned the first thing that happens is the contents of the Report are questioned. So motorists have been delayed for 40 minutes woopydoo. I would rather have a Census which at least will show traffic trends than blind decisions being made.

On George street bridge the other day I saw one of these census guys point to a car and he shouted to his mates stop that guy, pull him over he looks foreign and they all laughed - So were they just targeting foreigners ??? The census results will be interesting to read - will it give us a true picture if they are only targeting people who look foreign ? There actions were a bit strange to me.

you sound like someone who doesn't drive, or if you do drive you are not someone who has to be somewhere at a certain time (jobless and no commitments come to mind)

Typical for the amount of intelligence shown by most knuckle draggers in public office. Anyone with an ounce of sense would know there is no need to be stopping cars to find out where they are coming from.

Sorry, but I feel that the Argus reporting on the census survey has been a bit opportunistic and one-sided. How about giving the workers who have been tasked with conducting the census a chance to give their side of the story? At the end of the day they're only acting on orders and doing their job and can you imagine the abuse and physical assaults that some of them have had to deal with from certain motorists over the last week or so?

We haven't heard from the census survey workers, or from a representative for the census survey once in these reports, have we? They haven't been given the chance to explain themselves in this paper yet, have they?

It's all very well for a newspaper to make capital out of tapping in to what they feel makes their readership angry and feeding them with a limited version of the story that they second guess they want to hear. However, to be truly objective those entrusted with the responsibility of delivering the news must always strive to give a balanced account of events. Thank you.

These surveys are rare, they also help considerably. Bin the forms, moan and whinge about slight delays and spit your dummies out. Then in a few weeks get stuck in traffic yet again on the M4 for hours and curse the government for 'not doing enough to reduce congestion'. You'd all be the first to pipe up if they turned around and said the M4 relief road was cancelled due to a lack of people taking part in the surveys, leading to a lack of information key to moving it along. Also if I may add on the humorous side, if your leaving for work with no time to spare in Newport, then you quite frankly deserve to be late!
