AN EXHIBITION of work by the artist Falcon Hildred commemorating the disappearing industrial parts of British towns is on display at Newport Museum and Art Gallery.

The exhibition developed by The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, working in partnership with the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust and with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, shows watercolour drawings by Grimsby-born Hildred – and is accompanied by drawings depicting parts of Newport commissioned by the museum for its centenary year in 1988.

The drawings include his depiction of the iconic Transporter Bridge.

Since the late 1950s, industrial designer turned industrial archaeologist Hildred’s mission has been to make a visual record of the buildings of a disappearing 19th century industrial culture under the theme title Worktown.

He trained as an industrial designer in Birmingham before winning a place at the Royal College of Art in Kensington.

His works range from quick site sketches to detailed studies, and includes everything from a tin shed to a whole town.

Admission to the exhibition is free.
