NURSERY pupils from Maindee Primary School have been learning the culinary delights of the Far East this week at Newport’s Wagamama restaurant.

Staff got the children to try various exotic vegetables they may not have seen before such as mange tout whilst having fun decorating paper hats, helping prepare the food and eating ice cream for dessert.

Taking the children to places like Wagamama, just over the river on Friars Walk, is a nice way of getting the four year-olds to learn social skills and how to interact in different environments.

Nursery teacher Joanne Tymms said: “The children had a great time and the staff were really engaging for the hour we were there.

“The children got to try kid-version chopsticks and were probably better than us at using them.

“All our learning is hands on, it’s a really importance experience for them to go to places like this or shopping at a supermarket or toy store. If we can take them out somewhere their parents won’t go then that’s really good for them.”

Ms Tymms liked to keep it simple with chicken and noodles whilst her colleague Abby Parcell enjoyed the popular chicken katsu curry.

The sessions also help to breakdown language barriers through the activity, with the seven children who went yesterday speaking as many as five different languages.
