A GROUP of Gwent women turned heads while taking on a 10-mile bike ride for charity in multi-coloured bras.

The 10 riders raised £58 for the British Heart Foundation and the National Autistic Society through their efforts.

The riders, who came from across Gwent, cycled from the International Sports Village in Newport to the Sea Wall team rooms on Goldcliff.

The event’s organiser Christine Smith, 63, from Llanwern, said the group like to raise money for charity by donning eye-catching outfits in the holiday seasons.

She said: “I think everyone had a great time

“It did turn a few eyes and I was a little bit concerned that it would distract motorists driving.

“It’s not very often you see women go up the road in blinged-up bras.”

As well as raising money for the charities, the event was also an opportunity to promote Breeze, a women’s-only bike ride.

In May 2011, British Cycling set up Breeze to tackle barriers facing women and provide as many free opportunities to help them get back on their bikes.

On raising awareness of the rides, Mrs Smith added: “It’s just something nice and something for charity and it promotes Breeze and gets women out on their bikes.”
