THE Welsh Government’s Cabinet will hold an urgent meeting today to discuss the outcome of last week’s referendum.

First minister Carwyn Jones – who on Friday morning said he was “deeply disappointed” by the result – has already set out a number of priority areas for action and will discuss them with ministers today.

Among them are to protect jobs, ensure the Welsh Government plays a role in negotiations ahead of the UK’s exit from the European Union, and retain access to the single market.

Mr Jones has also said Wales must continue to have access to EU-funded projects while the way the UK Government funds Wales should be reviewed to ensure the country does not lose out as result of the Brexit.

“This will be one of the most important cabinet meetings since devolution, where we will look at an initial evaluation of the potential consequences of this result for Wales, and agree how we will take the priorities forward in the national interest,” he said.

The first minister added: “The full implications of this vote are still far from clear and will not be so for some time.

“However, one thing is certain. We as the Welsh Government are utterly determined to stay internationally engaged, outward-looking and pro-business in our approach.

“That is what will maintain business confidence, and that is what will help inward investors take the right decisions in this new, uncertain environment.”

He added the government would continue to work to support Tata Steel ad employees of the firm in the ongoing sale.
