AN APPLICATION to build 29 new affordable homes in Rogerstone has been met with widespread opposition from people living in the area.

Housing association Charter has lodged an application for the site in Tregwilym Road, which will go before Newport City Council’s planning committee on Wednesday, August 3.

Although the council’s planning department has recommended the application should be permitted subject to the agreement of legal conditions, residents in the area are strongly opposed to the plans, with two separate petitions against the scheme of 33 and 21 signatures each submitted, along with 29 letters of objection.

Among concerns raised are the increase in the traffic in the area, lack of facilities such as GP and school places or open space and parking issues.

Ward member Cllr Sally Mlewa has also objected.

“Whilst I applaud the construction of affordable homes in Rogerstone, I am also aware that the lack of green/open space in the area is in deficit by some 1.7 hectares,” she said.

“This being the case there is a need to hold on to any green that is in use for children to play on.

“At the moment there are less and less resources available for young people across Newport that are accessible to young children near their homes where they can play safely.”

A spokesman for Pobl Group, of which Charter is part, said: "We are hoping to create 29 high quality new homes, a high proportion of which will be to meet local demand for affordable housing.

"We have met with residents on a number of occasions to explain our plans and we have made a number of changes to the original proposals in response to points raised by the neighbours."

Wednesday’s committee meeting at Newport Civic Centre is open to the public and will begin at 10am.
