SENIOR Labour figures including Wales’ first minister Carwyn Jones, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and ex-deputy prime minister John Prescott met yesterday, Wednesday, to discuss the way forward for the UK.

Leader of the Scottish Labour Party Kezia Dugdale and Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett also took part in the discussion at Cardiff University on the future of Britain now the process of leaving the European Union is underway.

The event arranged by the Wales Governance Centre looked at constitutional arrangements within the UK after Brexit is completed.

Mr Jones said it was important voters were involved in any constitutional debates, and helping them recognise the relevance of discussions to their everyday lives was crucial to this.

He added he was particularly concerned a focus on the devolution arrangements with Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland would leave England sidelined.

“My greatest concern is Brexit will lead to a rise in English nationalism,” he said.

“That is a problem for us all.”

All speakers, who are part of a new Labour taskforce looking at how power will be ditributed across the UK post-Brexit, agreed for the country to prosper all four nations must work together, with Mr Brown saying: “The way of the future is cooperation, not division.

“The way of the future is partnership, not splitting apart.”

He added: “The only thing going forward in Britain this week are the clocks.”

Ms Dugdale said she believed the stability of the UK itself was at risk, saying: “The UK is under more threat today than it was the day before the last independence referendum in Scotland.”
