Gwent Police has said two males have suffered potentially life-changing injuries.

Both were taken to the Heath hospital in Cardiff, one by air ambulance.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Gwent Police on 101 quoting log 299 of March 30.

The road has now re-opened.

The road has now been re-opened both ways and the crash has been cleared.

The road is expected to remain closed until late this evening. A diversion is in place. From Abergavenny use the A40 towards Raglan then towards Whitchurch, the A4137 , the A49 towards Hereford and then the A465 towards Pontrilas. Towards Abergavenny - vice versa. Smaller vehicles - local routes.

A spokesman for Welsh Ambulance Service said two people have been taken to hospital following the crash. Both are described as being in a "critical condition."

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said two people have been taken to hospital following the crash.

One person who was cut free from a vehicle was taken by ambulance to The Heath hospital in Cardiff.

Another person who was being treated by paramedics at the scene has been airlifted to hospital.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman has said:

"This afternoon at 3.14pm, emergency services were called to reports of a four-vehicle road traffic collision on the A465 Hereford Road near Abergavenny.

"Specialist officers are at the scene and paramedics are currently treating the drivers.

"Hereford Road has been closed between the Hardwick roundabout and where the A465 meets Pandy and traffic is heavy. Delays are expected therefore drivers are advised to avoid the area if at all possible."

A spokeswoman for Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called to shortly after 3pm this afternoon, Thursday, to reports of a road traffic collision on the A465 Heads of the Valley Road in Abergavenny.

"We sent two rapid response cars, three emergency ambulances and two Wales Air Ambulances to the scene, as well as the Trust’s Hazardous Response Team.

"We’re still at the scene."

A BUSY road has been closed after a four vehicle crash near Abergavenny. 

All three emergency services are at the scene of the crash which happened on the A465 Hereford Road near Abergavenny at around 3.15pm.

A police spokesman said: "Specialist officers are at the scene and paramedics are currently treating the drivers.

"Hereford Road has been closed and traffic is heavy and delays are expected therefore drivers are advised to avoid the area if at all possible."
