IN THE first of a series of open letters to Argus readers by the newly-elected area MPs, Newport West’s Paul Flynn sets out his priorities:

Newport jobs are under threat.

The magnets are London and Cardiff seeking to steal existing jobs in the civil service.

Hundreds of precious Newport jobs are doomed unless the government can be deterred from creating a massive jobs hub in Cardiff and syphoning other jobs to London.

We must work to avoid a Brexit jobs slump.

Our dependence on Euro-links, especially Airbus, make us vulnerable.

There are fresh opportunities. The re-opening a long dead steelworks by Liberty Steel was a minor miracle. The entrepreneur responsible has exciting plans for generating clean sustainable energy from Newport’s massive long-neglected tides. Hi-tech opportunities are there in abundance

A weak Parliament will strengthen defence of pensions especially the WASPI (Women Against State Pensions Inequality) pensioners spurned by government.

The Tories planned a confidence trick to continue Severn Bridge Tolls at £3. They must be held to their election bribe and abolish them altogether.

Young people’s anger at long neglect of their needs was expressed in the election. New fair play for the young is a top priority.

New crises for individuals and families will be addressed by my staff. The NHS needs essential money.

A fair financial deal that matches our needs must be provided.

Environmental problems need attention - especially our polluted air.

Nationally and worldwide environmental threats to the habitat of our grandchildren must be recognised.

Climate change vandals like Trump should be challenged not encouraged with a state visit.

Potentially corrupting practices in parliament must be exposed.

Working with Jessica Morden, the Welsh Parliament and Newport Council, we must be vigilant shaping a Brexit that suits the Gwent economy and steers it safely through the turmoil ahead.

MPs must boldly proclaim pride in our world class Celtic Manor, Tredegar House and Roman remains.

The city sporting prowess must be celebrated with hope that the Flynns will continue to win for Newport.
