RAIL services between Newport and Cardiff will be reduced for over two months to allow for electrification upgrades.

The number of trains running will be cut between August 19 and September 3, with bus replacements set to work over the bank holiday weekend.

Trains will continue to run between Swansea and Cardiff, with journeys to London starting at Newport before being diverted via Patchway instead of Bristol Parkway.

A second phase of maintenance work will see services reduced again from September 23 until October 29.

Across this period the Severn Tunnel will also be closed for annual maintenance, leading to reduced services between Cardiff and London Paddington.

Andy Thomas, Network Rail route managing director for Wales, said: “We recognise that passengers will face some disruption, and we understand how frustrating this can be but this work is essential in preparing Cardiff for new electric trains as part of our Railway Upgrade Plan.”

Passengers are urged to check before they travel as journeys will be less frequent and may be longer during these works.
