AN ARTIST from Ebbw Vale has released a short documentary about his bullying ordeal ahead of this weekend’s Pride Cymru celebrations.

In the documentary, Nathan Wyburn returns to his hometown to chat with his parents about coming out as gay and being bullied.

Mr Wyburn also revisits an old basketball court by his former school where he chats and breaks down in tears about one particular incident.

He also looks through some old artwork he has not seen for 10 years. Mr Wyburn says his work was “very dark”, focused around “depressing” subjects and a “stark contrast to the upbeat colourful and playful work he’s now known for creating”. He then explains how his life was turned around by finding confidence in something he was good at - his art.

“I just want to show people it gets better,” Mr Wyburn said. “If this helps just one person it will be worth while -whether it is the person being bullied, the bully or a family, family of someone that maybe going through a similar thing.

“I’d like to thank those bullies for making me who I am today. I just wish I’d told someone what I was going through at the time.”

In the documentary, the artist also reflects on experiences such as meeting his idols, travelling the world and being invited to Buckingham Palace because of his charity work.

Mr Wyburn, a Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist, has posted the short documentary - #HeartToArt - in YouTube and social media in hopes of spreading awareness and potentially making another’s experience much easier. To view the documentary, visit youtu.be/WQoPBcxViPo
