A MOTHER-OF-TWO has said her five-week-old son could have been injured because a bus driver “failed to lower the bus” as she wheeled his pram off the vehicle.

Victoria King, of Maesglas, Newport, said she was travelling to the St Julian’s area of the city on a Newport bus with son Devlin Baker on Thursday when her pushchair “nearly flipped over” due to the bus driver “not lowering the bus”.

The 28-year-old said she was behind two other passengers when getting off the bus and lowered Devlin’s pushchair over the edge to get on to the kerb.

However, she said, when she lowered the buggy she discovered there was no kerb there.

“The driver failed to lower the bus, causing the pram to be angled,” she said, “And had there not been a pedestrian at the stop to help while hearing my screams, the pram would have surely flipped over.

“I was screaming ‘no, stop, no’ but the driver didn’t do anything. He just sat there with a blank expression. He didn’t even ask if my son was OK.

“He could have been seriously injured or could have even died.”

Miss King said she didn’t have the strength to pull the pushchair back up because she has spinal problems.

She said: “I had to make sure that I was still stable on the bus.

“If I fell then, what would have happened? I would have fallen on top of him and that would be it. He was in a right state and so was I.

“I did use some choice words, but I was furious.”

She said that after she had run her errands in St Julian’s, she got back on to the bus which had the same driver.

Miss King said the driver told her the suspension on the bus was broken, so he couldn’t fully lower the bus for her.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Miss King.

“He went on to tell me that when he let me off, it was a low kerb as there was a bus in front of us, which begs the same question: why not say: ‘Hold on a minute, I can’t lower the bus so wait until the other bus leaves the high-rise curb and then get off.’?

“No, instead he sat there watching me screaming as I fought to make sure the pram didn’t flip over.”

A spokesman from Newport Bus said that the company is currently looking into the complaint made by Miss King.

He said: “We have received a complaint from a customer to which we are currently investigating using CCTV.

“As soon as the investigation is completed, a full response will be provided to the complainant.”
