POLICE are currently dealing with a "large gathering" of people at Rassau industrial estate, Ebbw Vale.

A local councillor said there was an "illegal rave"-type event last night.

A spokesman for the force said officers are still at the scene to “ensure minimal disruption”.

Rassau Cllr David Henry Wilkshire said there was an “illegal rave” taking place in one of the empty factory units.

He said: “Bearing in mind the amount of vehicles, there must have been hundreds of people. It must have been well publicised because I understand people have come from all over the country.

“We could hear a thumping noise of loud music all through the night. It kept most of the residents in the estate awake, it went on for hours.”

The councillor said he visited the site this morning and that there are still lots of cars parked in the area.

“Most people are leaving now,” he said. “There are lots of debris and bottles left behind – definitely more than on an average weekend. It will now need to be cleaned up.

“We need to prevent this from happening again. It is a concern to residents and to myself that these things should happen.”

Cllr Wilkshire said he will be speaking to the police, but that he understands it is “difficult” to move a large crowd of people on.

Rassau Cllr Gareth Alban Davies said he was away for the weekend, but has read about what has happened.

He said: "It is awful.

"As I understand it, there was a lot of noise."

Cllr Davies said it is not the first time this has happened, with a similar event taking place in March or April this year.

"I will be talking to the police to see what we can do to stop this from happening again," he added.

Leon Cale, from Tredegar, went to the industrial state at around 8am this morning.

"The party was still going on - it was something like I have never seen before," he said. "There must have been around 1,500 people at that point.

"It didn't annoy me because I didn't see any trouble, people were just having a good time."

Mr Cale said there were lots of cars parked in the area, including some blocking people's drives, and that the factory itself was a "mess" but the sorrounding area not so much.

He said there were around 50 to 60 officers in attendance when he went.

A spokesman for the police said: "At approximately 11.15pm on Saturday, October 28, we received reports of a large gathering taking place on the Rassau Industrial Estate in Ebbw Vale.

"Officers are currently at the scene to ensure minimal disruption and to prevent any crime or disorder taking place.

"We are aware there are travel issues due to volume of parked vehicles in and the around the site.

"Officers will remain in the area to ensure those present leave safely and peacefully.

"Thank you for your cooperation."
