SCHOOLS in Wales will be able to apply for up to £1,000 towards visits to events commemorating the First World War, it has been announced.

Education secretary Kirsty Williams has announced the funding will be made available as part of the Go and See scheme funded by the Welsh Government and Arts Council of Wales.

The scheme began in 2016 covering arts events and has already benefited more than 12,000 young people. It has now been expanded to cover First World War events.

Ms Williams said: “As we commemorate Armistice Day, we remember the lives of all those who served in the First World War and pause to reflect on how this terrible conflict shaped the modern world.

“These grants will enable schools to take learners out of the classroom for visits to heritage sites or events, such as exhibitions or theatre productions. These are the kind of experiences that help bring the past to life.

“This is an immensely important part of the learning experience and supports the new curriculum, which places creativity at its core”.
