CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a thermal waste treatment plant near Caldicot will not by dealt with by the local planning authority until next year.

Nearly 300 people have objected to the application seeking to build 15.5 metre high chimneys at the former Tata Steel site in Portskewett’s Severn Bridge Industrial Estate.

In a response to an email from Caldicot Town Council, Monmouthshire council’s Nia Watts wrote: “The application will definitely not be determined this year.

“If it does get to a position where it can be presented to committee I imagine this would be well into next year.

“It will only go to planning committee if we are minded to approve the application as it can be refused under delegated powers.”

The letter also says that the county council are waiting for further information from the applicants, DPS Process Solutions Limited. Assessments on health impact, odour and air quality - all issues raised by objectors - have been requested.

Ms Watts’ email adds: “Once further information is received, Caldicot Town Council as well as the other community councils in the area will be informed.”
