A ‘”LIVING” wall has been unveiled at the UK’s first high energy proton beam therapy centre in Newport.

The wall, which measures 104 square metres, will signify “life, strength and hope” at the Rutherford Cancer Centre, which opened its doors to patients in the summer.

The Proton Partners International facility currently offers diagnostic imaging, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, with the high energy proton beam therapy set to be operational early next year.

Designed by landscape supplier Scotscape, the wall is made up several species of plants known for their year-round pollinating capabilities, air-cleaning qualities and to double as a habitat for wildlife.

Angus Cunningham, managing director at Scotscape, said: “We are looking forward to seeing an end result that is worthy of its initial conception and we hope that it brings a sense of belief to all who come to the centre.

Mike Moran, chief executive officer of Proton Partners International, added “It was important to have something that changed with the seasons as a reminder to everyone that they are arriving somewhere where life thrives. This will also be the last thing they will see when leaving the centre following treatment.”
