Thousands celebrate coming of National Eisteddfod

EBBW Vale officially welcomed the coming of the National Eisteddfod at the weekend with a proclamation ceremony in the town.

The week-long event comes to Gwent on July 31 2010 and Saturday marked the the beginning of the year-long countdown.

More than 2,500 people were out in force throughout the day, making the most of the sunshine and the spectacle.

Hundreds of people followed the march to the Gorsedd stone circle from the town centre before the hour-long ceremony, conducted in Welsh.

In a break with the norm, former Archdruid Selwyn Tolen held court as the current incumbent, Dic Jones was unable to take part due to illness.

Former Wales and Scarlets player Robin McBride was chosen to bear the sword and Sarah Baker was tasked with presenting the horn of plenty to the Arch Druid.

Flower girls from schools across Blaenau Gwent entertained the crowds with a dance performance.

Eisteddfod co-ordinator, Jo Thomas, said: "It's been phenomenal, today is very unique and the community have come together, the people of Blaenau Gwent are welcoming the Eisteddfod. The turnout speaks for itself."

mervyn james, for you to call anyone a "whiner" must rank as one of the worst cases of the pot calling the kettle black i have seen or heard for a very long time!!! even if you dont agree or like Buckinghams opinions the alternative is censorship and secrecy, although i seldom differ from Buckinghams appraisal of things,
when i do it is usually diametricaly i still wouldnt call him a "whiner"

Mr Buckingham has repeatedly attacked the Welsh, and the welsh language. Including statements like what use are we ? the welsh culture ? or the Welsh language ? and why we should be run by England and get 'sorted' out. If he dislikes us so much then why is he living here ? Just so he can annoy us with his English is best view ? He IS whining. (And repetitively boring too on this subject). His basic agenda is anti-Wales. That's his bottom line regardless what else he does.

You will see I am right because the odds are 20-1 he will do an article running it down. he has never said anything positive about the Welsh language or culture. Go HOME Buckingham.

I agree with you about that Buckingham, but we could show him some compassion and understanding. He can't help it, he's a man out of time. He's actually from the 1950s and woke up in Gwent after bumping his head at Morris Dancing competition in Surrey. He's been trying back to his own time and believes he can achieve this by getting us Welsh, here in Gwent Wales, so angry our collective energy will open a rift in the space/time continuim allowing him to return to his beloved Middle England. So if we get really angry and somewhat miffed with the reactionary drivel he gets published in the name of journalism, we might just get rid of him!
