GWENT Police has launched an All-Wales seatbelt campaign warning motorists of the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt.

“Your seatbelt can save your life” is the message being promoted by the two-week campaign, which is due to start on September 7.

All four Welsh police forces are teaming up with Capita Symonds and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, to focus on education and raising awareness of the dangers and possible consequences of not wearing a seatbelt.

Officers will be stopping drivers and passengers not wearing a seatbelt, who could face fixed penalty notices of £60 or if the case goes to court, fines up to £500.

As an alternative to prosecution, motorists and passengers will be given the opportunity to watch a film on the dangers of not belting up.

Gwent Roads Policing Inspector Lee Ford said: “We run seatbelt campaigns every year and although the majority of people understand the risk they face by not wearing a seatbelt, there are those who continue to ignore the dangers.”
