IRRESPONSIBLE drivers were targeted in the latest police operation on the M4 in Gwent.

Road policing officers used unmarked vehicles to identify drivers committing offences during the operation which took place over eight days between January and February.

A total of 57 offences were detected, including driving without a seatbelt, using a mobile phone, vehicle defects, a learner driver towing a load and one driver was caught flossing their teeth while driving.

All offences were dealt with either by a fixed penalty notice or the driver being reported for summons.

Inspector Lee Ford said: "It is very concerning that a number of drivers are driving irresponsibly and carelessly on our motorways.

"The potential risks that some of the offences detected as part of this operation can have not only on the safety of the driver involved, but also other road users, should never be underestimated."

Officers will be repeating the exercise throughout the year.
