A WOMAN who faces the prospect of being forced out of the Risca care home she lives in celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday.
Irene Gough marked the milestone with a party for family and close friends at closure-threatened Ty Darran, which is under the threat of closure.
Mrs Gough's granddaughter, Angela Millard, 49, said: "The staff at Ty Darran have been absolutely amazing, they treat her like their own grandmother.
“Every time I think of the closure, my stomach turns, but we made this a special day for my nan."
Caerphilly council, whose cabinet will decide next month whether to close the home, sent Mrs Gough a bunch of flowers.
Mrs Gough is one of 14 residents at Ty Darran who could be forced to leave.
Born in Newbridge, Mrs Gough is one of ten children, she got into Newbridge Grammar School, but had to leave at 13 to care for her mother.
She married her husband, Harry, in Newbridge in 1935 and the couple had three children. Mr Gough died in 1987.
Mrs Gough's trick to longevity is staying active and a devotion to her family. She has four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
She also has one surviving brother, Horace Durham, 91.
A three-month consultation on the possible closure of the home, which also employs 28 people, was entered into in January. Caerphilly council say parts of the 36-bed home are not fit for purpose and redevelopment would cost £500,000 with annual running costs of £444,000.
