A PENSIONER was cut out of his car yesterday after it got stuck on top of a rising bollard in Newport.

The man, who is believed to be in his 70s was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital complaining of neck pain after firefighters removed the top of his silver Ford Focus to get him out.

The angina sufferer was lifted onto a spinal board and taken away by ambulance after the incident, which happened around 2.47pm outside the Kings Hotel, in High Street.

Richard Davis, 35, managing director of nearby LRS Security, went to investigate after hearing a loud bang from his office.

He said: “I looked out the window and saw him trapped in there and went down. We settled the guy down, got him sat back and told him to relax. I held his head while the firefighters worked to get him out. He was in shock.”

An eyewitness said the driver had tried to follow another car over the bollard, after it had sunk to the ground, but he was too late and his car got stuck as it started to rise again.

A spokeswoman for Newport City Council said the authority was investigating what happened.
