A NEWPORT youngster braved the cold waters of Tenby to take part in the annual Boxing Day swim in aid of the charity that supports him and his family.

Ten-year-old Cameron Carnell, of Lliswerry, who was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) three years ago, has so far collected £580 for Thrive Cardiff – a support group set up for children and parents affected by the condition.

His mother, Catherine Horton-Shaw, 38, said the group was “like a family” for youngsters like Cameron, whose boisterous nature is often mistaken for deliberate bad behaviour.

Despite the cold the St John Ambulance cadet was adamant he would do it all again for the worthy cause.

She said: “After Cameron was diagnosed, as a family we found it very lonely and wanted to speak to people who understood what we were going through, no local support groups were available.

But there he doesn’t have to conform, no-one judges him, it’s brilliant.”

Now thanks to the charity’s support Mrs Horton- Shaw has set up her own group, with the help of Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations (GAVO), called Newport ADHD Family Support.

The group meets once a month at the Children’s Forest Centre in Duffryn from 2pm until 4pm on the second Saturday of the month.

Details can be obtained from GAVO worker Nicola Davies on 01633 241578.
