A CAMPAIGNING group is considering taking court action over a proposal by a community council to sell a field to be used to build homes.

Ian Phillips, chairman of the Bethesda Field Action Group, said the group is currently looking at its legal options over the action of the council in bringing to the site to planning.

A planning inquiry was held last week into an appeal by Rogerstone Community Council against the refusal by Newport council planning committee to grant outline planning permission for the site to be used for 22 homes.

The inquiry heard that campaigners were contacting the Information Commissioner after the community council turned down a Freedom of Information request for the release of council minutes.

Mr Phillips told the inquiry that he and other residents felt they had been misled.

He said the first they had heard of the development proposals was when they saw men in flourescent jackets who said they were carrying out a survey.

The inquiry heard council minutes from July 2010 advised councillors to reply ‘no comment’ to inquiries from residents.

Mr Phillps told the Argus: “We’re looking at the legal options open to us. We’ve been in touch with our barrister since the end of the inquiry.”

More minutes have been released this week which the group is looking at the moment, Mr Phillips added.

He couldn’t say whether they would be pursuing a judicial review.
