THREE generations of a family have been killed in a suspected arson attack this morning, including a newborn baby only just out of hospital.
A mother her daughter and a new born infant died in a blaze in Coed Eva, Cwmbran in the early hours of this morning.
The baby is understood to be one of twins - the sibling having died earlier.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and is currently in custody.
Rosemary Seabourne, wife of Fairwater councillor Phil Seabourne said: "It’s very sad. The family was a friend of our daughter. It’s tragic, it really is. A grandmother, mother and grandaughter, and entire family, gone.
"I believe the baby only came home from hospital yesterday. They were twins and she lost one, but she brought the other home yesterday."
A Gwent Police spokeswoman confirmed that two adults and one infant died in the blaze at Tillsland, Coed Eva.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 3.30am, with a South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman describing it as a "serious house fire", that was tackled by four appliances and a water bowser.
The upper floor of the two-storey building on Tillsland is reported to have been completely burnt out.
Fire Service and police officers will this morning begin forensic investigations at the scene and conduct house-to-house enquiries in the area.
