UPDATE: 11.46am

TWO people involved in this morning's crash on the M4 were both taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital with neck injuries.

The driver of a silver Vauxhall Omega, a 23-year-old woman from Cardiff, and the driver of a black Volkswagen Polo, a 24-year-old woman from Westbury.

The collision also involved a blue Renault Clio, the driver of which was uninjured.

Officers were called to the incident at around 7.45am today.

The motorway was closed temporarily while the vehicles were moved to the hard shoulder.

A South Wales Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said two people were still in their vehicles being assessed by paramedics.

There are severe delays on the M4 and surrounding roads in Newport after a three vehicle collision on the motorway.

Three lanes are closed due to the  accident on the M4 Malpas Straight Westbound between Junction 26 A4051 (Malpas Road) and J27 B4591 (Highcross).

There is congestion on the M4 to J24 A48 / A449 (Coldra).

All three lanes are closed while emergency services deal with the three vehicle collision. Traffic is passing on the hard shoulder.

Rubbernecking motorists pausing on the opposite carriageway to look at the crash are causing further congestion and delays.
