The end of the Summer term marked also marked two other significant ‘ends’ at Ysgol Y Ffin, Sudbrook.  The first was the leavers’ assembly for the first children who had had their entire primary education at the Welsh Medium School, which opened in 2001 on the Sudbrook site. The children will now move on to Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw in Pontypool, with one other pupil going on to attend Bristol Cathedral School.

Following on from this, in the evening, the school opened its doors to former pupils, staff and friends from Sudbrook village for a celebration of education on the Sudbrook School site as the Welsh school is leaving the village to relocate to Caldicot from September and the buildings will sadly become redundant.

Headteacher Mrs Diane Ebo said: “We are celebrating the start of an exciting new era for Welsh-medium education in Monmouthshire but it is also the end of an era for Sudbrook.

“There has been a school in the village for nearly 130 years and we are so pleased that so many people have come to be part of the evening.

“The people of Sudbrook have welcomed us as a school and being here reminded me of my own rural upbringing.”

Most of the decades from the 1920s to the present day were represented by the attendance of former pupils. The two oldest were Mrs Muriel Hillier and Miss Elsie Isaac who are now in their 90s..

Throughout the evening there was music and dancing to entertain the guests. The children performed songs and dances with their music teachers. There were also performances by the Delyth Wyn Folk Group and Clive Lemon.  The school’s PTA organized a history room with displays and books of photographs and newspaper articles from the all site’s schools’ and Sudbrook village’s history.  There was also a running Powerpoint presentation arranged by Rachel Richards. Outside activities for the evening included a treasure trail around the Sudbrook and a birds of prey demonstration.

The PTA wish to thank all those who helped to make the evening such a great success as well as the following local businesses who provided raffle prizes; Spar Portskewett, Hair Studio, Portskewett Inn, Somerfield, Piercefield at St Arvans and Country Flowers, Caldicot.
