For the last few weeks I have kept an eye on the garden pond. Why had the frogs not arrived? Every year at around the same time in February, the frogs are suddenly back in the pond in their hundreds, croaking away to attract the females. This year it had all been very quiet - until I went out to feed the birds quite late on Saturday afternoon. The frogs were there, lots of them, and making the familiar noise that I can only describe as drumming'. As I went quietly over to the pond, the noise stopped and they all disappeared under the water. There is frogspawn there already. It is really good to have them back. A friend who was at the house a few weeks ago when I was not around, said she had seen the pond heaving with frogs but they were not making any noise. There has been quite a cold spell in between so possibly the frogs were lying low until the weather got milder. So now the frogs are here and there are daffodils and primroses out in the garden, spring must surely be on its way. And just to confirm that, a friend from a farm up the road has told me that the wild geese flew in this morning, making a terrific honking noise to announce their arrival.
