THE sun shone down on celebrity golfers competing in a charity tournament in Newport on Saturday.

Welsh 400-metre runner Matt Elias was crowned champion at the fundraiser, which was organised by Newport rappers Goldie Lookin Chain (GLC) and Voice magazine to bring some golfing fun to Newport residents without tickets to this week’s Ryder Cup.

Other celebrities who took part were Newport former athlete Jamie Baulch radio presenters Bethan Elfyn and Owen Money, singer Paul Child, GLC members and former Torchwood actor Gareth David Lloyd.

Matthew Pritchard, who stars on television show Dirty Sanchez, removed one item of clothing at each of the nine holes and was wearing only a pair of Speedo’s by his final hole.

More than 200 spectators watched the free tournament at Caerleon Golf Club and donated around £200 to Newport mayor Bill Langsford’s charity, Tenovus.

Rhys Hutchings, also known as Xain in GLC, said: "Matt Elias was tip top, both his long and short game were exceptional.

"The support from the general public was fantastic."

In the evening, 1,200 people packed out The Newport Centre to watch GLC and other local bands, including Dirty Goods, Newport Allstars and Flow Dem, perform.
