MOVE over WAGS, there's a new breed of sporting wife and girlfriend in town.

And they don't spend their lives shopping in designer boutiques or hanging out in trendy wine bars.

Meet one of the 'Gwragedd Rygbi' - Welsh for rugby wives and Gwrags for short - Newbridge woman Jo Popham, wife of Wales star Alix.

Jo, 25, is one of the stars of a new TV programme depicticng their lives. And it couldn't be more different to those of Posh, Colleen McLoughlin or Cheryl Tweedy.

The first episode of the S4C series shows her taking a limo ride to London with the other Gwrags for a luxury weekend, taking in an away game with the Llanelli Scarlets for whom husband Alix now plays.

But Jo says the life of a Gwrag is not all glamour, designer handbags and sunbeds.

You won't find Jo living it up like football's WAGs, sipping champagne from the executive box on matchdays.

It's more likely to be tea and sandwiches for this working mum, as she cheers on the boys from the Stradey Park stands.

"I sometimes go out with Sarra Elgan, Simon Easterby's wife, and Sara Davies, Gavin Evans' girlfriend, for a coffee, but we meet up at cafes in Bridgend, not five-star hotels," says Jo, a full-time office worker.

"The limo journey was just done for the programme. I'm just too busy to live like a WAG, what with work and looking after Holly. The other episodes show us at home, where Alix is cleaning up dog mess in the garden!"

Jo and two-year-old daughter Holly will be at the Millennium Stadium on Sunday for the first Wales match of the Six Nations against Ireland.

Team selection will take place on Thursday, and the family are hoping Newport-born back row Alix could be playing.

Jo says she and Holly also have to cope with Alix going on international duty for days, even weeks at a time.

"I've always been a rugby fan - I used to watch it with my dad - so it's great being able to watch all the Scarlets and Wales games," she said.

"You also get to meet lots of people.

"But the down side is he's always away. We really miss him, especially when he joins the Wales camp for a week at a time. Holly kisses the telly when she sees him, and asks if he's sleeping on the grass."

The five-part series is being aired to coincide with the Six Nations. The first programme of Gwragedd Rygbi is being shown at 8.25pm on Thursday, February 8.
