THIS week's picture is Maindee, The George pub, I think on the corner of Victoria Avenue. It reminds me of my childhood, going to the pictures with my brothers on a Saturday morning. Great times, great memories.

The Now and Then pictures are of Maindee, the then picture showing a busy scene with a tram in the distance. The Now picture shows Maindee from the Wharf Road intersection, looking down towards Maindee police station. The area has seen a downturn recently with the closure of stores such as Peacocks, the Co-op and AF Thomas & Sons.

I worked at Martins Bank in the 1960s when Spencer Works was being built and I had to take the day’s work for processing into the High Street branch each day and the traffic was so congested that you could walk into town quicker than the bus could take you.

Today’s picture is Chepstow Road at the junction with Victoria Avenue. On the left, the George pub stands out, and is still a very popular haunt for music lovers. Looking to the left, features the road going down towards town, and it was a really bustling area then. Sadly today there are many boarded-up properties and shops.

The photo is in Maindee, Chepstow Road. In 1945-46 my grandmother, whose surname was Wilks, lived above a shop named Bevan or Bevans, I used to sleep there most weekends for a long time. I seem to remember the corner being called Rainbow corner, almost opposite the George Hotel.

It’s Maindee, Newport. Some house on the left had to go when they built George Street Bridge. Maindee super cinema is still there but it’s a pub now, sadly.

William Kiff, Newport

The Now and Then is of Maindee and the pub is the George Hotel, opposite is Wetherspoons which was once a cinema and bingo hall. There was a Kwik Save which became Somerfield but is now closed along with Peacocks. Opposite there is another pub, The Bank, on the other corner was Thomas.

The Now and Then picture shows Chesptow Road looking towards town from the bottom of Victoria Avenue. On the right is The George Hotel and ahead lies Maindee and in the distance a tram, but no sign of any other vehicles. In the Now picture there are several cars and few pedestrians. The most noticeable feature in the old photograph is the huge telegraph poles.
