LAST week we featured a picture of Commercial Street in Newport.
THIS is Newport’s Commercial Street down at the St Paul’s Church end.
The building on the left-hand corner of Palmyra Place was Bollington’s the clothier and the YMCA was next door.
GoingJudging by the tram lines, carsvehicles, fashions and bunting, this could be 1937 – the year of the Coronation of King George VI the Sixth.
Dave Woolven, Newport THE ‘Then’ photo was taken in Commercial Street when King George VI was crowned of 12 May 1937.
The 'Now' photo shows a different section of Commercial Street.
Mary Walker, Newport THE 'Now and Then' photograph is of Commercial Street in Newport. where You can see the butcher shop.
On the corner was Bollington which sold school uniforms and is now a Wetherspoons.
There was YMCA which has closed. On the other side is J P Stores and a jewellery shop.
At one time it was Thomas the Butchers and Principality Cleaners.
A big electrical store was close by and the central hall was also there.
I think it is now St Davids hat sell furniture and bed clothes for charity.
There used to be a bicycle shop and also a fish shop.
Looking straight up it looks like the town hall clock.
M Reardon, Newport Museum Piece comments for last week: THIS is the old bus station in Dock Street at the back of the market.
Buses here included the No. 3 Malpas and No. 9 Docks.
In the 1950s there used to be an open market here.
Kingsway is in the background under which lived Damper Dick, an old tramp.
