AST week we featured a picture of the Town Hall in Blaenavon from the 1920s.

THIS building is situated on the High Street in Blaenavon. Blaenavon is a town located in Gwent in South East Wales, but was historically in the county of Monmouthshire. This hall is also known as the Blaenavon Workmen’s Hall.

The hall opened at the start of 1895 and its formation was funded by the Blaenavon Workmen’s Institute. As an important part of the community, there was a library, entertainment, games and activities available. Now the hall has a cinema, concerts, snooker and table tennis available for the public.

Additionally, it hosts many conferences and meetings for groups and societies.

TODAY’S picture is Blaenavon. Maybe the old Town Hall.

Museum Piece comments:

LAST week’s picture was Newport’s medieval castle on the River Usk, built in the 1200s. It has seen many changes in its fortune. The castle walls used to reach as far as the bottom of Stow Hill. The nearest tower housed the water gate. The castle guarded the river crossing.
