AFTER enjoying a double success last weekend, Blackwood will attempt to build up momentum when they host Bonymaen today.

While the Glan-yr-Afon Park outfit were beating Pontypool 20-13 seven days ago their flying three-quarter David James was starring for Wales in the 13-man code.

He crossed for a try against France in Lens and while he goes up against England in Wrexham this afternoon his union clubmates will be trying to notch their third win of the campaign.

“It was good to get the win against Pontypool but the way that we won was disappointing,” said head coach Matthew Veater, who was at Pooler when his playing career was cut short by a neck injury.

“We went 20-0 up but then squandered that position and were hanging on at the end.

“We have upped it in training this week and it’s an 80-minute performance that we need against Bonymaen.

“Because we have had some good first halves, some good second halves but haven’t put it together for a whole game.

“That’s a little bit worrying but when it does click we will give someone a real shock.”

Third-placed Newbridge had to work hard for their seventh win at Bonymaen last weekend and will fancy their chances of taking their tally to eight today.

Bottom club Whitland are the visitors to the Welfare Ground – though the west Walians’ last result will ensure there is no complacency.

They became the first side to beat Ebbw Vale this season when they claimed their first success of the campaign.

The Steelmen, who trail leaders Bargoed by four points, attempt to bounce back from last weekend’s shock defeat when they welcome Beddau to Eugene Cross Park.

Ebbw endured a frustrating afternoon out west and were nonplussed at a number of decisions but have to put it behind them.

“The boys are determined to bounce back,” said head coach Jason Strange. “Although there were factors that were beyond our control, we know we need to put in a performance that’s back to our best if we’re going to beat Beddau.”

Pontypool earned a bonus point at Blackwood last weekend that keeps them above Whitland in the table.

Today they attempt to record their second win when they host mid-table Llanharan.
