AFTER a dominant display against mandatory challenger Robin Krasniqi on Saturday at Wembley Arena, Cefn Fforest fighter Nathan Cleverly vowed to clean up the division by winning unification fights.

That’s easy to say and far harder to do of course, not least because it’s incredibly taxing to even attempt to make a unification fight, such are the politics of the sport.

Even now, Cleverly is supposed to prepare for another mandatory defence of his WBO title while 48-year-old IBF champ Bernard Hopkins is wasting one of his last performances against mandatory challenger Karo Murat, already dismantled by Cleverly.

These are the kind of irritations and frustrations that fight fans must endure, but it’s that precise “we want it all now,” culture that 2013 sports fans have that will ensure Cleverly does get the big fights sooner rather than later.

His promoter Frank Warren is only too aware that his punters won’t stand for Cleverly facing mandatory challenger after challenger, as was the case with Joe Calzaghe.

That simply isn’t the culture of the modern fight fan, they will expect to see Cleverly tested at the highest level sooner rather than later and Cleverly himself isn’t for hanging around.

I’d be surprised if one of his next four fights isn’t a unification battle (providing he keeps winning) and Warren appears to have a plan of ensuring he remains active.

“I want Nathan to fight in July, September and maybe once more before the end of the year,” Warren told me on Saturday. With that kind of schedule, Cleverly’s career can finally start to gather momentum.
