NEWPORT County AFC enter the draw for the first round of the League Cup for the first time in 26 years on Monday and Justin Edinburgh’s side could be paired with one of the Football League’s big guns.

The round one draw for the 2013/14 Capital One Cup will be announced online at CapitalOneCup.co.uk, as well as on Facebook and Twitter, at 9.30am on Monday.

The first round draw is seeded based on the final league positions of teams from the 2012/13 season and then split regionally – north and south.

The Exiles, promoted from the Conference with Mansfield Town last season, are in the south section and are unseeded.

And that means that a glamour tie against Championship heavyweights like Birmingham City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Leicester City or QPR is possible.

An all-Welsh clash against Cardiff City or Swansea City will have to wait as County’s Premier League neighbours do not take part in the first round.

The Bluebirds will enter in round two and the Swans, who won the Capital One Cup last season by beating Bradfird City in the final at Wembley, have a bye to round three because of their Europa League commitments.

But there is also the possibility of County renewing their rivalry with near neighbours Bristol City in round one.

The club’s last involvement in the League Cup, or the Littlewoods Cup as it was then known, was in October 1987 when Brian Eastick’s side lost 6-0 on aggregate to second division Crystal Palace in the second round.

The 2013/14 first round ties will be played on either Tuesday, August 6, or Wednesday, August 7.

Edinburgh and his men embark on their historic League Two campaign just days earlier on Saturday, August 3.

The League Two fixtures will be announced next Wednesday morning at 9am.
