ST JOSEPH’S boxing star Lee Selby is ready to put on a show for his fans once again in his next title defence.

The 26-year-old Barry boxer, who trains with Tony Borg at St Joes in Newport, was criticised by many for a workmanlike win over Viorel Simion in Hull last month.

Selby has now revealed that he picked up an injury early in that fight and has vowed to be back to his swashbuckling best in October.

He will defend his British and Commonwealth titles once again when he takes on Ryan Walsh at the O2 Arena in London on October 5.

“I was a bit disappointed after beating Simion but I picked up an injury early on in that fight,” he explained.

“I didn’t say anything after the fight because I didn’t want to make excuses but it did affect me.

“I’m ready to put on a show against Ryan Walsh on October 5.

“It’s a massive fight for him. He’s going to come and give it his all and he’s going to be fit and strong but I think I’ll be too good for him the longer it goes on.”

Selby did win the praise of Britain’s top boxer Carl Froch for his professional performance against Simion and that has given him a confidence boost as he trains hard to take on Walsh.

“With Simion I didn’t want to take too many risks. I just wanted to get the WBC ranking,” he said.

“Boxers could see what I was doing, just getting the job done professionally, but some of my fans wanted to see me showboating.

“Carl Froch is a top boxer so it means a lot to hear praise from him and I’ll be going back out to Floyd Mayweather’s gym in September to train and spar, which is a big boost for me.

“My fans were disappointed last time out but you can’t put on a big show every time because sometimes there is too much at stake.

“Simion was a good experienced fighter and I know what to expect from that level of fighter now and I’ll be back to my best against Walsh.”
