More than 1,200 County fans heading for Bristol

NEWPORT County AFC will have more than 1,200 fans cheering them on at Saturday's League Two clash with Bristol Rovers, writes Andrew Penman.

County will take their biggest away following of the season for a league match.

The figure of around 1,230 travelling fans easily beats the current best figure of 964 fans who saw County's 0-0 draw at Cheltenham Town in November.

It also surpasses the 1,063 Pirates fans who came to Newport in August for the reverse fixture, which ended in a 1-0 win for Justin Edinburgh's men.

And it is only exceeded by the 1,699 supporters who travelled to Premier League side West Bromwich Albion for the club's Capital One Cup second round tie in August.

The Exiles have not played since the dramatic 3-3 draw at Accrington Stanley on Saturday, January 11, after last weekend's home clash with Dagenham & Redbridge was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Rodney Parade.

They will be hoping to complete a league double over their near neighbours at the Memorial Stadium after Andy Sandell's penalty was enough to beat his former club at Rodney Parade on August 17 last year.

It will be the club's first league trip to face Rovers since Roger Gibbins scored twice to earn County a 2-2 draw in December 1986.

That match was played at Bath City's Twerton Park Home. The last time the clubs met in the Football League in Bristol was a 1-0 defeat for County at Eastville Stadium in February 1986.
