South Wales Argus: ATTACKING INTENT: Newport County's Ryan Jackson takes on the Plymouth defence ATTACKING INTENT: Newport County's Ryan Jackson takes on the Plymouth defence

IT WAS another bad night on and off the pitch for Newport County AFC as Plymouth plundered three points at Rodney Parade.

First half strikes from Tyler Harvey and Conor Hourihane, either side of Chris Zebroski’s equaliser, boosted the Pilgrims' play-off hopes.

But the result left County still looking over their shoulders to the League Two relegation zone and now with no games in hand over their rivals.

And there was a big blow for the Exiles before kick-off as Ismail Yakubu was ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with an ankle injury he picked in the 1-1 draw at Chesterfield on Saturday.

“It’s a real bad one. It looks like he’s severely damaged ankle ligaments,” said manager Justin Edinburgh of his influential central defender.

“He may need an operation, but he's going to be out for a minimum of 12 weeks.

“That’s just about how our luck’s gone this season with injuries,” he added.

“I don’t go on too much about it but we’ve had an horrendous time of it.

“But we’ve dealt with it as a squad and a club very well. Credit to the players but it’s a big blow for us.”

In Yakubu’s absence there was a recall for Darcy Blake after his suspension as the Wales international looked to rekindle his promising partnership with young Kevin Feely.

Both sides started brightly on a beautiful night for football and County captain Mike Flynn could have given his side the lead inside the first ten minutes.

Saturday’s goal hero Max Porter clipped in a deft through ball but the skipper’s header was way off target.

At the other end Hourihane forced a fine save from Exiles goalkeeper Ian McLoughlin and Marvin Morgan couldn’t profit from the rebound.

But the visitors were ahead on 21 minutes when Nathan Thomas was given far too much time and space to cross from the left flank and Harvey headed home unmarked inside the six yard box.

While the sizable travelling support went wild, the home fans must have mentally prepared themselves for another evening of suffering at Rodney Parade.

It seems a long time since we were able to refer to County’s home as a fortress with only one win in 11 here since the turn of the year and none since the 3-2 victory over Oxford United on February 18.

That compares to only one home defeat in League Two in 2013 – the freak 3-2 loss to Morecambe in September when Tom Naylor hit the self-destruct button.

To their credit Edinburgh’s men responded well on this occasion with the impressive Zebroski levelling matters against one of his many former clubs within six minutes.

The Exiles’ top scorer raced onto a long ball forward, outpaced Maxime Blanchard and beat Jake Cole with an expert finish for his 11th goal of the season.

But the Pilgrims still believe they can make the top seven and they showed their willingness to fight for the points straight away.

Reuben Reid found Hourihane in space just inside the box and the visiting skipper fired past McLoughlin to restore his side’s lead on the half hour.

The hosts made a game of it after the break with Zebroski again going close to levelling with a header just wide from Robbie Willmott’s corner.

And substitute Christian Jolley made an immediate impact with some superb footwork to beat two players inside the area and set up Flynn but the skipper fired just over the top of Cole’s bar.

Curtis Nelson clipped the outside of the post late on and Hourihane curled one just over the top but two goals were enough for a precious three points for the visitors as the Exiles’ Rodney Parade pain went on.

Is the manager? I don't think so. Out of his depth at this level.
Just waiting for more excuses from him.
If we get no more points this season we will be very lucky to stay up.

Apart from the goal and a Flynn header we created nothing while our centre backs were as weak as Tesco tea. Our best team is: Pidgeley, Jackson, Yakubu, Worley, Naylor, Wilmott, Porter, Burge, Chapman, Zebroski, O'Connor. But how many times this season, because of injuries and the manager's poor team selection, has it played together. A fingerless man could tell you!! And with Yalkubu injured yet again, it will be a struggle to stay up. Defeat on Saturday and I think we could yet be relegated.

Just witnessed another poor display by the County, we MUST get someone who can control midfield, someone to hold onto the ball while players get into positions, we need some sort of midfield general, and until we get someone like that I don't think we will be going anywhere but down. This must be the priority for next season, and I think I am being generous in saying that there are only about four players out of this squad that should be there next season.i will continue to pay my £14 every game for the rest of the season but I do expect to see a vast improvement in quality player signings for next season.

Every game I go to, I think surely they will play better this time, put out their strongest possible team and yet I keep seeing the same names in the side who are probably not even good enough for the bench.

Fantastic Conference Manager but think that's his level.

Went to the game last night. County were very eager in all departments. That is they were very eager to give the ball away at every opportunity. What has happened to their thinking. For me the biggest let down was Wilmott. He looks great charging down the wing until he runs out of pitch. He has absolutely no idea how to switch the ball inside. Zebroski played his heart out but nobody else did. Very poor team effort again.
Don't think this manager has any idea how to motivate the team. How much more evidence do we need before the club does the decent thing.
Worst period I can remember in 50 years of being a supporter. Doom and gloom? Yes thanks to our inept players. But to quote the manager from a few weeks back " 99.9% of supporters are happy". Really?

Troll he may be, but would it be so bad? For most, no doubt it would but for me the happiest times I've had watching The County have been in the Beazer Homes League Midland Division.

At the end of the day, football is football and we play against teams of approximately the same standard as ourselves whatever league we are in. It matters not a jot to me whether the name of the opposition is Plymouth or Paget Rangers (and I still have the programme from the match at the Vale Stadium).

Do I enjoy having a pint of almost undrinkable beer in the unwelcoming concrete halls at Chesterfield or in similar circumstances at Burton but with a policewoman half my age and with half a brain pointing a video camera at me and the wife through the bar window? Not particularly.

I much preferred the enjoyable experiences of Crown Meadow at Bridgnorth and similar places.

You obviously weren't there last night then. If you had been, you would have noticed the Hazell stand encouraging the team as always. Even after the form we have been in since Christmas, there wasn't one boo last night. It's all positive from us, but the players aren't bothered. Hughes was a liability, Wilmott was decidedly disinterested and Blake isn't fit. Flynn misplaced about 50% of his passes. Our only tactic is long ball, long ball, long ball. It's conference football at best. League 2 opposition defenders are lapping it up. They just get the big men under the ball and snuff the long ball out. The only bright note was Zeb (and maybe Jacko)! I'll be there as usual for the Wycombe game and will be cheering on the side like it was the first game of the season. There's no questioning the commitment of the supporters here. We are all 100% behind the County, but we are sick and tired of the lack of passion. Losing to a better side is one thing, not bothering is another. The jersey should be reserved for players that work for it, not for journeymen picking up their mortgage payments after 90 minutes of jogging around in circles looking bored.

Nothing wrong with my education? As a football fan I can only assume you were in the REMS or did jobs for the caretaker in School, hence your complex about all things written?

Most of the football fans and players in my school were idiots and a bit on the dull side, it's a true reflection of you in this case.

What a name, Brat..... small and annoying, oh, and weak I bet....unless you got all your mates behind you chanting rubbish of course......

DOWN THE COUNTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We'll be O.K., if we get one win .....or a couple of draws..

Crucial game Saturday, although we do have a few games left against the likes of Rochdale, Burton and York and our record against the top half of the table is better than against the bottom half.

Up the County!

Keep the faith.
Do you also see little pink things flying past your window?
I feed them every day....:)

If he would take Boddy with him, then I would say the sooner the better.

Otherwise I am not too sure.

JE wont resign because County are the worst team in League 2 since Xmas so he wouldn't get an equivalent job let alone a better one. Also he was never going to get the Pompey job and Northampton, certainly not a step up from County, were the only other team interested in him (unofficially at that). So lets not overvalue him.

I do think JE is a good manager despite the disaster since Xmas. County will avoid relegation (just) and he'll be a better manager after this seasons experience. A very big task though for him (or any manager) this summer to convert the squad into a robust League 2 squad.
