NEWPORT County AFC striker Shaun Jeffers says the players are desperate for a home win to reward the club’s fans for their support.

The Exiles have won only once in 11 games at Rodney Parade in 2014 and that was back on February 18 against Oxford United.

Jeffers says the players want to put on a show and get a win for the supporters after Tuesday’s home defeat to Plymouth Argyle.

And Justin Edinburgh’s men know that a win over relegation-threatened Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow would put to bed any fears that they could be dragged towards the drop zone.

“We’re all disappointed by that defeat because we came into it in good form after the draw at Chesterfield,” said the former Peterborough United front man.

“We were very positive after getting a goal back so early on but then we conceded again very quickly.

“We keep chasing games at the moment and we’ve got lots of character in the squad but that’s difficult to do every week.

“We need to rectify our mistakes and improve on Saturday because we haven’t won at home for a while now.

“Our form has dipped and we’re desperate to put on a better performance for the fans, who have been great and stuck with us all the way.

“We’ve got a great squad here with a lot of talent,” he added. “We showed that at the start of the season and hopefully we can get back to that kind of form towards the end of the season.

“We want to finish the season well and take that momentum into the new campaign.”

Jeffers, who arrived at the club in January as part of the deal that took Conor Washington to London Road, is enjoying life in South Wales despite the team’s poor form.

“I’ve settled in well,” said the 21-year-old from Bedford. “The lads have welcomed me and I’m looking forward to next season.

“I want to establish myself in the team and I know I’ve got to keep working hard.

“I want to help the team as much as I can. I’ve been lucky enough to have got a couple of starts in the past few games and it’s been great to get the opportunity to show what I can do.

“Hopefully I can keep helping the team and I can help us get a win against Wycombe.”
