NEWPORT sprinter Mica Moore’s preparations for the Commonwealth Games continued with a new personal best in the 100m and a new Welsh relay record.

The 21-year-old will represent Wales in the 4x100m relay at Glasgow 2014 and she enjoyed a superb set of results in Geneva at the weekend.

The European Permit Meeting in Switzerland was one of the events identified and supported by Welsh Athletics for athletes to gain experience ahead of the Games.

And the Welsh women’s sprint relay team took a huge chunk off their own national record with a third-place time of 44.66 seconds behind the Swiss and Irish quartets.

Hannah Brier (Swansea AC) led off and handed on to Hannah Thomas (Wrexham AC), who in turn passed on the baton to Moore (Birchfield Harriers) and Rachel Johncock (Swansea AC).

Their finishing time was 0.51 seconds faster than they had run in Loughborough last month when they first captured the record and improved their position as ninth fastest in the Commonwealth this year.

And Moore led the way on the individual front with a personal best time of 11.65 seconds in coming home in second place in the B 100m final, having clocked 11.71 seconds in qualifying.

That moved the former Bassaleg Comprehensive School pupil up to ninth place on the Welsh all-time rankings over 100m and she can’t wait to compete in Glasgow next month.

“We got given a big bag of kit last week and we’ve just got to collect our competition kit in a few weeks time and we’re ready to go,” said Moore.

“That is when it starts to become real; when you start trying on the kit.”

Moore and her relay teammates will continue training here before flying out for a preparation camp in Portugal and on to Scotland.

“I’m still training just as hard as I was through the winter before we fly out to Portugal on July 16 where we’ll be doing specific relay practice,” she explained.

“That will be vital because we all live quite far apart so it’s difficult to get together a lot of the time at home but we’re going well at the moment.”
