THERE was a disappointing end to an otherwise highly promising day in the boxing ring for Team Wales as Blackwood's Kody Davies was beaten by Scottish heavyweight hope Stephen Lavelle, losing on all three judges' scorecards.

The former British youth champion, who only turned 20 before the Games and is the youngest member of the boxing team, was forced to play second-fiddle to the aggressive Scotsman, who came into the ring determine not to be the second home fighter in a row to lose in front of a passionate home crowd.

From the start Lavelle forced the pace and it wasn't until the third round that Davies, who covered up well and was never in any real difficulty with the power of his opponents punches, managed to get off some telling shots of his own.

With half-a-minute left in the third round Lavelle had to go to the doctor when he received a cut above his eye, but he was able to carry on and see out the job of successfully reaching the quarter-finals.

"I wouldn't be in there if I didn't think I had a chance," said Davies afterwards. "I'm still learning, I only turned 20 two weeks ago but still, I'm happy to be here at the Commonwealth Games."

Lavelle said: "Kody kept pushing me all the way but there was no way I was going to lose a fight in Glasgow."

"He gave me a few moments and we put on a bit of a show but it was always going to be mine."

Earlier Cardiff's Nathan Thorley knocked out Tonga's Benjamin Taualii in the first round to progress to the quarter-finals.

Newport's Sean McGoldrick begins the defence of the 56kg title he won in Delhi four years ago on Monday afternoon.
