NEWPORT County AFC earned their first point of the League Two season with a 1-1 draw at home to high flying Burton Albion.

The Exiles took the lead thanks to a slice of luck on 37 minutes.

Chris Zebroski flicked a high ball goalwards and visiting captain Ian Sharps could only head it onto the bar and into the back of his own net.

Lee Minshull then hit the bar with a stunning volley but John Mosuinho earned the Brewers a point six minutes after the break as he fired a volley into the bottom corner of Lenny Pidgeley's net.

“It is a relief,” said Edinburgh. “I don’t like losing; nobody does. I’m realistic and it was a slow start but it was only three league games into a 46 game season.

“I thought we were very good in the first half; our play was excellent and we deserved the lead.

“As time went on in the second half we lost our way a bit in the game but, all in all, we’ve given ourselves a foundation to build on.

“We couldn’t quite get a clean sheet to collect the three points but credit to my players; they showed courage, the crowd got behind them and it was a good performance.”

But the relief of the Exiles' boss was tempered by the news that striker Rene Howe is unlikely to play again this season after rupturing a thigh muscle in training on Thursday.

Good display for 45 minutes that ultimately changes nothing. A nervous defence that gifted Burton their equaliser and whose even bigger gift should have led to a Burton winner; a punchless attack, also gifted a goal and which never troubled the Burton 'keeper; nobody on the bench capable of changing things. As some of us have said for months, we need some new faces and we have a week to find some.

Joy oh Joy we played football on the ground.
The first half was superb, cannot fault any one.
Jackson should be automatic first choice and Robbie was class.
We were playing a top class opposition and we could of had 3 points or nothing that type of a match.
Keep playing like this and we have got no worries.
Jones to stay Captain.
We had a midfield for first time since Xmas
All 3 were superb
Great performance.

Agree to some extent about our attack but we were playing top of the table and first point they have dropped
Best County performance since Xmas by a mile

I must have been at a different game to you, although we lacked a bit of punch up front the midfield were up to it today and you must remember this is a side that is yet to be beaten. I said in the week I wanted to see a passing midfield and today I got it, no route one just playing football, keep this up and it will come.

A better display today. At least the ball was kept on the floor.Unfortunately up front there is absolutely no fire power.I don't think the Burton keeper had one save to make.We also need another decent keeper to challenge Pidgely as for me he doesn't command his area.

You were definitely at a different game. Good performance all round by County against a team that had won 3 out of 3. A much improved passing display by the County players with 55% possession. County far better in possession than Burton with County 9 shots off target to Burton's 5. Only 2 shots for each team on-target though. Well done boys - more encouraging.

An excellent point against one of the best sides in the division who looked no better than us. Jacko was man of the match by a country mile - if that doesn't cement his place at RB then nothing will. Also impressed by Hughesey at LB, Jones at CB and Chapman CM. Kept the ball on the deck all game, so no complaints there - pitch looking imaculate by the way. One area of weakness I can see is lack of pace at centre back - a pacy opposition striker could potentially tear us to shreads. My one criticism of Justin today was he took far too long to make a substitution second half - 7 mins was no time at all for Jeffers and by about 60 minutes the attack was looking a bit toothless with Azza ad Zeb (cannot fault the work rate of the latter mind). I think now is the time to give Jeffers a chance. Overall a pleasing/encouraging performance and a point well gained.

Lets hope this is the turning point. Ball on the ground and pass it around certainly worked in the 1st half. Agree with some of the above we really are short of a consistant striker O'Connor just doesn't seem up to it. Don't know about Parker, has he had a game even as a sub.

I'm probably one of the most negative on here, but this was a much improved County performance. Played the ball on the floor and really should have won the game. If only Minshull's shot had crept under the bar. We still look a bit dodgy at the back and we had a let off when they were through on goal and managed to hit the post. If County continue to play this way we should survive. Wilmott, Byrne and Jackson were tremendous. O' Connor was awful I have to say, Jeffers was hungry for the ball in the short time he had on the field. We kept the ball well and pressed well. They only real negatives were defending their equaliser (players out of position AGAIN!) and our messing about passing across the back four. Oh and Hughes would probably struggle to get a starting place in a Conference side to be perfectly honest. Does not look confident on the ball at all. Nearly scored a ridiculous own goal too...

Funny how two people see the same game differently. I though Hughes played well - first half especially, didn't put a foot wrong and made several good tackles

Some of these comments just prove how much attention the pessimists pay, people saying our back 4? Ummm we played 3-5-2 again today so what were u looking at? People saying Hughes played poor for me was man of match just ahead of jacko and Robbie, people criticising Justin and the game clearly just have a vendetta and as far as I'm concerned would rather them not stand so close to me at any other games criticising, stay at home the club will survive without your £16 a week!!!

I thought that I watched a team with Jackson at right back, Jones and Feely at centre back and Hughes at left back. Perhaps I was really watching 3 centre halves, and and Wilmott and Sandell trying to be wing backs. I do get confused these days.

I missed yesterday's game as I'm away for a few days but after the poor start we've had I can only take the positives out of this result, we got a point against 1 of the early pacesetters so as far as I'm concerned that's great, having said that I think we need a few new faces in the squad if we can ship a few of the current players out as some are clearly not up to it, see you all at Pompey next week. What an improvement, the players seemed nervy and no one wanted to be the one who made that fatal mistake, but overall it was a decent game.
people around me were sighing and tutting when we were passing along the back, but thats what the better teams do, you stretch teams, it also led to some of our best passages of play, otherwise its a long ball again.
chapman played well as did byrne, but I thought the new back 3/4 played well, jacko was superb after a slow start, hughes played really well and had to deal with a tough opponent, I thought his passing to robbie was excellent.
just need to find the right combination for our forwards and we will be fine.

Likewise, it was Jones, Feely at CB and Hughes, Jackson, RB, LB. That's 4. Count them if you want. I watched the whole game, although I missed part of the band as I went to the toilet and queued for a cup of tea at half time under the Hazell.
Likewise, it was Jones, Feely at CB and Hughes, Jackson, RB, LB. That's 4. Count them if you want. I watched the whole game, although I missed part of the band as I went to the toilet and queued for a cup of tea at half time under the Hazell. Byrne, Wilmott, Minshull and Chapman in Midfield and Zeb and Aaron up front. 4-4-2. You need to learn to count.
You need to go to Specsavers. 3-5-2. Jackson and Willmott were wing backs.

Yes that's how I saw it. I watched for this particularly since I am interested in how Edinburgh is setting the team up. Wilmott was playing down the left in a mid to forward position with Hughes generally behind him. Jackson was defending the right but as with all good full-backs these days he has the ability to overlap down the flank. The days are gone when full backs didn't cross the half way line.

It was definitely 5 at the back. Three centre backs with Willmott and Jackson in the wing-back positions, with three central midfielders.
If it was 4-4-2 who was playing wide right?
No-one. Jackson was doing the work of 2 men. Defending the right back position and attacking down the the right flank. There was often a great empty area on the County right when Jackson was defending. Doesn't mean that there weren't 4 in mid-field though. There were, including Wilmott who was at last allowed to do what he does best. The County mid-field were drawn to the left yesterday.

You, sunshine, are living in Cloud Cuckoo Land! This was a vast improvement, with the team playing some good, attractive football...at last! Whilst Rubble4 is entitled to his/her opinion, I respectfully suggest that he/she has not got a clue as to how the game is played!

First half they played great, second half, slipped back a little to the other style they play when they lose, Jackson, speed and control should be up front attacking, County performance 6/10... the Parachute Regiment played a blinder....

B3talover and Frankfurt I haven't a clue how u guys can honestly say u watched 90 minutes of that game yesterday and the county lined up any diff to 3-5-2. It doesn't matter how many midfielders or defenders were on the pitch the formation was never and hasn't been for over 2 years at 4-4-2.

I thought yesterday was a great improvement with perhaps the main failing that the forwards aren't being offered real chances, they have to graft6graft for everything.

To end the formation debate, I checked with a couple of the players. They confirm it was 3-5-2 yesterday (5-3-2 when without the ball).
