JAMES Nasrat has been given another weekend to prove himself after the first wave of athletes in the British team which competes in the European Championships on March 2-4 was announced.

The selectors have left big gaps in various events to allow athletes to compete this weekend, particularly at the Norwich Union Grand Prix.

Nobody has been picked in Nasrat's 800 metres event, while the only Welsh-based athlete to be included in the team is Cardiff AC's James Thie in the 1500m.

That allows the Newport Harrier, who is fourth in the British rankings this year after last weekend's European trials, to race again this weekend and improve his time..

There is also no-one selected in the men's 200m or 400m in the initial 25 names announced by UK Athletics.

A statement said: "Selectors will meet again to review results following the Norwich Union Grand Prix at the National Indoor Arena and the Indoor City Challenge Final, both taking place this weekend.

"A final selection meeting will take place on February 24 with the results up to that date also eligible for consideration.

However, it is anticpated that the majority of selection decisions will be settled following this weekend's competition opportunities."

The 25 athletes confirmed in the team so far includes new English sprint sensation Craig Pickering, of Milton Keynes and Bath University.
