NEWPORT County AFC have announced the loan signing of defender Ben Davies from Championship outfit Preston North End.

The defender has experience of playing in League Two, having previously enjoyed loan spells with both Tranmere Rovers and York City.

Davies spent time with Southport earlier this season in the Vanarama National League, making eight appearances before being recalled by Preston.

Speaking after the deal to sign the defender had been agreed Exiles manager John Sheridan said: “I have always liked Ben.

“I remember from back when I was at Plymouth that he did really well at York City and even helped them get into the play-offs.

“I know that he has a good understanding of this division and I think he is unfortunate not to be playing regularly for Preston.

“Ben has done well in this division before and this move is an opportunity for him to play some games and I am really glad that we have got him here.”

The 20-year-old’s loan deal will run until the home fixture against Carlisle United on February 13.

The defender will also be eligible for Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers at Rodney Parade, subject to international clearance.

Speaking about having Ben available for Saturday’s game, Sheridan added: “It was important that he wasn’t cup tied before joining us. Hopefully Ben will come in and hit the ground running.”

“Saturday will be a big game for him against Blackburn, but I am very confident that he will do well for us.”
